Intensive interest has been shown by worldwide researchers for mesoporous materials because of their high potential applications as adsorbents, drug delivery, water treatment, and membranes for gas separation. These applications have been possible by means of the functionalization of mesoporous materials with organosilane compounds. Here, we report the covalent grafting of polyacryalmide (PAAm) onto MCM-48 silica via free radical polymerization. Firstly, mesoporous silica was functionalized with 3-aminopropyltrimetoxisylane (APS) in order to obtain a silica with NH<sub>2</sub> groups onto its surface. Then, 4,4′-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA) was reacted with the amine-modified mesoporous silica. The resulting silica was able to generate free radical onto its surface by the decomposition of the azo group. The hybrid materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmision electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption studies.
