Solution processable conjugated polymers and small molecules possessing low bandgaps have been the subject of intensive research in the field of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Incorporation of Pt(II) complexes into conjugated structures has been considered beneficial for OPV operations because they typically show strong spin–orbital coupling effects that induce formation of long-lived triplet excitons. Thus Pt-containing conjugated polymer and small molecules have been considered as promising candidates in OPV research. Here a conjugated boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY)–platinum polymer and a roller-wheel Pt-containing small molecule (SM-Pt), possessing structural characteristics that are distinctively different than conventional motifs, have been synthesized and characterized. The polymer possessed a low bandgap of 1.7 eV and the bulk heterojunction solar cells employing this polymer gave high open circuit voltages up to 0.92 V and power conversion efficiencies close to 1%.1-2 The SM-Pt has certain crystallinity that has rarely been observed in Pt-bisacetylenide conjugated molecules and display panchromatic adsorption features.
