A synthesis is presented for the cyclization of alkyne containing amines to polycyclic aromatic heterocycles. Indoles and many other aromatic, nitrogen-containing heterocycles have been found to be biologically active and abundant in nature. Derivatives of these compounds are commonly used in a number of different applications. This research aims to control the mechanism of cyclization from a common precursor based on variations of reaction conditions. This work will then use a diverse assortment of alkyne containing amines to produce a number of polycyclic aromatic heterocycle derivatives.
