Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) promise potential uses in spintronic devices and as qubits in quantum computers. To improve SMM behavior, two parameters, spin and molecular anisotropy, must be optimized. This is typically achieved through the introduction of highly anisotropic lanthanide ions and/or anisotropic 3d metals. Pecoraro and co-workers identified the first LnIII/Mn family of SMMs over a decade ago. In celebration of Vince’s Distinguished Service Award, we present a new family of 3d-4f metal-containing macrocycle compounds as potential SMMs. These compounds presented here have a general metal stoichiometry of LnIII4MnIII4, where LnIII = YIII, DyIII, HoIII, and ErIII. These compounds form two LnIII2MnIII2 planes separated by approximatley 3 Å. These LnIII2MnIII2 planes form two half-metallacrowns. The 4f metal ions were systemmatically substituted while maintining consistant structural geometry. This substitution allowed for exploration of magnetic behavior of the complexes, identifying the role the identify of the LnIII ion played on magnetic properites. Slow magnetic relaxation has been observed in the DyIII4MnIII4 compound, indicating that it might be a potential SMM. Interestingly, none of the other complexes showes slow magnetic relaxation, demonstrating the importance of LnIII selection in overall magnetic properites.
