Incorporation of heteroatoms (e.g. boron) into a π-conjugated framework is a powerful strategy to modulate its optoelectronic properties. However, only a few π-conjugated molecules with ring-junction heteroatoms have been synthesized until today, mainly due to synthetic difficulties. We will present convenient synthesis protocols for corresponding boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons starting from multiply halogenated precursor molecules. The moderate helical distortion of their molecular scaffolds confers excellent solubility to the highly fluorescent, electroactive luminophores obtained (Figure 1).1 1 Schickedanz, K; Trageser, T; Bolte, M.; Lerner, H.-W.; Wagner, M.
