Halogen atom photoelimination reactions involve anion oxidation, a crucial step in closed HX splitting energy storage cycles. In this poster, we report a photocatalytic reaction mediated by cerium(IV) hexachloride to produce Cl2 gas from Cl– using visible light. X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis were applied to characterize both cerium(IV) and cerium(III) species present in the cycle. Chemical traps, including N,N-dimethyl-1,4 phenyldiamine, toluene, cumene, phenol, benzene, and 9,10-dihydroanthracene, were employed to estimate turnover numbers of the Ce(IV/III) cycle. The results are suggestive that Ce(III/IV) photoredox cycles will be competent for halogenation chemistry.
