Congratulations to ACS Nobel Laureate Signature Awardees for Graduate Education in Chemistry, Matthew J. Polinski (student) Bloomsberg University of Pennsylvania and Thomas E. Albrecht-Schmitt (preceptor) Florida State University. The purpose of the award is to recognize an outstanding graduate student and his/her preceptor(s), in the field of chemistry, as broadly defined. The award is sponsored by Avantor Performance Materials, Inc. and award designation with the acquiescence of the Nobel Foundation. The student will receive a cash award, travel expenses and a plaque inscribed with the signatures of Nobel laureates. The preceptor will receive a cash award, travel expenses and a plaque for permanent display in the institution's chemistry department. I have had the pleasure of working with Professors Polinski and Albrecht-Schmitt in the preparation of berkelium borate compounds using the world’s supply of Bk-249 (~10 milligrams). Borates have a number of interesting properties for characterization. This effort will be presented.
