Iridium pincer complexes are attractive for catalysis due to their robustness under harsh conditions and their highly tunable ligand framework. For (PCP)Ir and (POCOP)Ir complexes, the steric environment at phosphorus determines reactivity at iridium and its preference for Ir(I) or Ir(III). A rare example of competing hydrogen addition pathways to (POCOP)Ir(CO) complexes has been documented; addition could proceed via a proton-catalyzed pathway or a direct oxidative addition. Experimental and computational results comparing hydrogen addition to (PCP)Ir(CO) and (POCOP)Ir(CO) complexes will be presented. The synthesis of new iridium pincer complexes and their applications to catalysis will also be discussed.
