Porous carbons have been prepared by a soft template method using 2,2-biphenol, followed by ammonia heat treatment. The porosity of prepared carbons could be controlled by the amount of block copolymer as a soft template. The carbonized phenolic resin has specific surface areas of 648 m2 g-1 with a pore volume of 0.43 cm3 g-1. After heat treatment under ammonia atmosphere, the specific surface areas were further increased up to 1778 m2 g-1 with a pore volume of 0.75 cm3 g-1. The prepared pristine carbons have higher CO2 adsorption capacity, although had lower surface areas than commercial activated carbon. The CO2 adsorption capacity of carbonized phenolic resins also increased from 2.15 to 2.98 mmol g-1 after ammonia activation.
