1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and lithium chloride melts ([RMIm]Cl-LiCl) have been prepared for the dissolution and regeneration of cellulose. The [RMIm]-LiCl<sub>2</sub> melts were prepared through the reaction of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and lithium chloride. The solubility of cellulose could be significantly increased up to 320 % by addition of LiCl in the [RMIm]Cl. The regeneration of dissolved cellulose in the [RMIm]-LiCl<sub>2</sub> melts was simply conducted by addition of water and recovered by removing the water. The effect of LiCl on the dissolution of cellulose in [RMIm]-Cl were also investigated by computational studies.
