Iridium complexes of the general structure [IrCp*LCl]n+ (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl, L = chelating ligand, n = 0, 1) have recently been proven as potent catalyst for water oxidation as well as for the direct oxygenation of unactivated C-H bonds. [1] While abnormal carbene complexes of the 1,2,3-triazolylidene type have been shown to be potent catalysts for the water oxidation reaction, [2] only recently have their activity in direct oxygenation been tested. [3] In this contribution we will present the syntheses of new [IrCp*LCl]n+ complexes where the denticity of the ligand L has been varied from the well known 2,2'-bipyridine (L1) through pyridyl-triazole (L2), bis-triazole (L3), pyridyl-triazolylidene (L4), triazolyl-triazolylidene (L5) and bis-triazolylidene (L6) ligands. Additionally, the carbanionic ligands L7 and L8 will also be discussed. The uitility of these complexes as catalysts for the direct oxygenation of sp3 C-H bonds using m-CPBA or sodium periodate as sacrificial oxidants towards cyclooctane, fluorene and ethyl benzene will be shown.
