In the early 1990’s while at UMASS Lowell, Stanley C. Israel took time out of his busy schedule to meet with a graduate student and gave him some advise about what a postdoctoral opportunity may bring. That student never imagined that 20 years later he would receive an award bearing Israel’s name! The dedication and the one-on-one mentoring approach, accompanied with the awareness of the diverse world we life in, resonated with me back then and has continued to be vibrant during my entire professional career. The national demographics continue to show a growing demand for a diverse workforce in the chemical sciences. Despite some progress, we must maintain a bold determination to advancing diversity in our profession. This presentation will reflect on experiences and efforts undertaken to increase participation of underrepresented students in the chemical sciences while at the University at Buffalo.
