Divalent cobalt complexes of a series of tetradentate N<sub>2</sub>Py<sub>2 </sub>ligands have been synthesized to investigate the effect of ligand structure on their electrocatalytic activity. This series of ligands features a control ligand with no pendant base and two ligands with pendant bases that can either act as a proton donor or a proton acceptor. The effect of ligand structure on reactivity with small molecules for the complexes was investigated.
