As the tools and manipulatives of chemistry education have evolved over time, so too have the instruments employed to study the processes of learning and inform the design of effective instruction. From the days of chalkboards and ball and stick models to modern computer simulation and molecular modeling in virtual reality, the visual attentional component of exploration and learning could only be inferred. The advent of eye gaze tracking can provide the insight into visual processes that affect learning and the development of robust and flexible chemistry domain knowledge. This session provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of eye tracking and a variety of technical implementations of the technique. These range from high resolution desktop screen-based systems to compact, highly portable units for field or classroom use to unobtrusive wearable eye trackers. Typical applications and methods will be described as well as common and informative gaze behavioral metrics and measurements.
