Intermolecular double hydrophosphination reactions with alkyne substrates and primary phosphines has been achieved with a zirconium catalyst, [κ5-N,N,N,N,C-(Me3SiNCH2CH2)2NCH2CH2NSiMe2CH]Zr. This reaction selectively adds two P–H bonds across an alkyne to form 2,3 bis(phosphino)alkanes. The intermediate vinyl phosphines formed in this one-pot reaction have been isolated. Functionalization of the product 2,3 bisphosphinoalkanes at the phosphorus center is demonstrated. This reaction is a rare example of a catalytic double hydrophosphination reaction and has activity for both terminal and internal alkynes.
