A series of new cyclometalated palladium (II) complexes based on tridentate ligands containing carbon and nitrogen donors with a coordination geometry featuring in a fused five-six-membered metallacyle were synthesized in high yield by direct C-H bond activation. The complexes are very stable and fully characterized. The complexes were evaluated as catalysts in a standard Suzuki coupling reaction, and demonstrated high catalytic activity. Complexes are also effective in catalyzing other cross-coupling reactions, such as Sonogashira coupling, Heck reaction, and Negishi coupling. The effect of different coordination structures of the palladium complexes on their catalytic activity and the mechanisms of catalytic cross-coupling reactions will be discussed. The effect of reaction conditions, such as the solvent, additive, and temperature, on the palladium-catalyzed reactions will be discussed as well.
