The Aquinas Chemistry Society is a student chapter of the American Chemical Society that has strived to engage and educate both students and the Grand Rapids community about the multifaceted nature of chemistry. With this in mind, the club has endeavored to instill a love and respect for chemistry in people of all ages through events in four different categories: service, professional development, chapter development, and social functions. Events like an ACS booth at Saint-Stock (a welcome event for freshmen), Homecoming, Fall Fest, and painting the school’s spirit rock have helped improve the club’s visibility on campus. Likewise, during National Chemistry Week events such as Coke & Mentos reactions, growing rock candy, and painting with chemistry all focused on engaging students in dialogue about the benefits of chemistry. To encourage students to interact with the chemistry faculty and one another, the club held a Find the Mole event and an Exam-Cram science building lock-in study session. Annual events Saint Albert’s Day and Chemistry at the Mall concentrated on getting elementary-aged students interested in and excited about science. Finally, the Poje Banquet and our Lecture Series brought renowned scientists to campus to show the cutting-edge nature of chemistry. All of our events also aim to intertwine elements of and promote green chemistry by reducing waste and educating students. The student chapter has attended the past four ACS National Meetings and has been recognized as a Commendable and Green Chapter for the 2014-2015 academic year.
