Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a very powerful, sensitive and atom-selective tool for investigating both the local chemical environment and the dynamics of electrolytes for ionic batteries. A large set of complementary NMR techniques allows probing the molecular/ionic dynamics in different length and time-scales. Herein, we will show how local parameters like chemical shift and J-coupling of chemical functions help determine the solvation sheath and ionic interactions for a better understanding of electrochemical stability and interphasial reactivity of the electrolytes. The ion transport characterization through self-diffusion coefficients, combined with other measurements (such as conductivity, viscosity…) or calculations (like Molecular Dynamics), allows a comprehensive description of the physical-chemical phenomena influencing the electrochemical properties of the electrolytes. Several applications will be presented. We will also show an attempt to correlate ionic associations in BF4- -based electrolytes with 11B quadrupolar relaxation (directly measured by 11B NMR and through advanced 19F line shape analysis).
