The professional identity of most faculty members centers on their scholarship – the papers they publish and the work from their laboratories. This world-view is reinforced by the promotion and tenure guidelines at major research universities.  However, this is not the only model on which one can build a successful career.  Research can inspire novel teaching and mentoring that in turn feeds back to improve student training.  If that student is more productive as a result of this mentoring, it closes the circle and enhances the research program. The portfolio of activities that will be discussed are funded by a variety of mechanisms including BEST (NIH workforce development program), BUILD (NIH Diversity Training Program), WIDER (NSF) and IUSE (NSF) programs in addition to the grants that support our research efforts. These activities have helped to frame institutional priorities and support strategic initiatives to improve student outcomes at both the undergraduate and doctoral levels.
