During the past few years, raspberries have been marketed as a “superfood” due to their high antioxidant content, and therefore, their ability to protect our bodies against free radicals. However, since all raspberries are not grown in the same way, the issue of whether organic raspberries are nutritionally better than non-organic raspberries arises. Previous studies focused on levels of antioxidants in organic versus conventional crops have given different results, ranging from significant differences to no significant difference. In an attempt to further explore this area, experiments were undertaken in our lab to analyze the level and antioxidant activity of polyphenols present in organic versus non-organic raspberries. Methods used included the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, the Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, and the Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) assay. This presentation will discuss the preliminary results obtained through the three tests.
