Anthraquinones are highly conjugated three ring molecules that have promising applications for the advancement of organic electronics as well as many emerging biomedical applications. Some anthraquinone derivatives have served as precursors for new types of π-stacked materials with interesting charge carrier and optical properties. Others have recently shown potential towards applications as antiviral, antidiabetic, anticancer and immune suppressing agents. Despite their emerging importance, many anthraquinones are not readily available and they are challenging to synthesize. Here, recent work towards a general approach for the synthesis of highly-substituted anthraquinone derivatives through a microwave assisted double Friedel-Crafts Acylation will be discussed.
