The goal of this research was to fabricate an epoxy matrix with an inherent self-healing capability. To accomplish this, several ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) active macromonomers were synthesized. The macromonomers were used as a constituent in a new ROMP-active resin material, improving the healing response of the material when compared with non ROMP-active resins. The monomers were synthesized by reacting 5-norbornene-2 methylamine with several different epoxy resins obtained from Dow Chemical Company. A first- generation Grubbs’ catalyst was used to promote ROMP.<br/><br/>Self-healing activity was confirmed using a modified lap-shear mechanical test. Healing effectiveness was measured by injecting pre-catalyzed healing agent onto the surface of the lap-shear specimens and then allowing the healing agent to polymerize. The effectiveness of composites utilizing the new macromonomers was determined by comparing the failure strengths of the non ROMP-active control with the new ROMP-active material.
