Multinuclear NMR can be used to probe the structure of transition metal complexes and can enhance the education of undergraduate students conducting research. While phosphorus-31 NMR has been useful in the characterization of [(dppePt)2(μ3-S)2RuCl(PPh3)2]Cl and some derivatives, we desired additional information about the products of the reaction between [(dppePt)2(μ3-S)2RuCl(PPh3)2]Cl and PMe2Ph. Platinum-195 NMR has several advantages over 31P NMR particularly that the differences in chemical shifts in the 195Pt NMR are greater and the Pt-P splittings are clearer than the satellites present in the 31P NMR. The 195Pt NMR can be used to probe ligands bound directly and indirectly to the platinum center. Platinum-195 NMR and its application to the analysis of [(dppePt)2(μ3-S)2RuCl(PPh3)2]Cl derivatives and its use in undergraduate research will be discussed.
