Organophosphate (OP) pesticides represent a significant portion of the pesticide market in usage today in both industrial and household settings, increasing the risk of exposure to these inherently hazardous compounds. Acute intoxication results in inhibition of acetylcholinesterase which may result in death. The increased use of organophosphate pesticides has led to the need for a rapid testing method for OP contamination in water and soil sample. This study will present our progress in synthesizing a small molecule fluorescent sensor for the detection of OP pesticides. The syntheses of two naphthalene based <i>ortho </i>hydroxyoxime sensors were achieved and detection using both UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy was attempted using either TsCl (initial studies) or chlorpyrifos (representative OP pesticide).
