On March 9, 2015, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor ACS Student Chapter held its first event at McLane Children’s Hospital in Temple, Texas. The members of the club brought experiments and activities for the children staying in the hospital. The goal of the event was to help the patients become distracted from their hospital environments by providing fun and safe experiments, and also to encourage them to have an interest in science. Attendees got a chance to perform five hands-on experiments including nail polish laminated bookmarks, shaving cream art, slime, oobleck and bouncing bubbles. We made a brochure to teach kids the chemistry behind these experiments. Before we started the activities, a child life specialist had about 15 minute orientation for the club students, which was such a neat experience! The patients and employees at the hospital had a great time. They were able to learn several science concepts and experience the excitement of chemistry! This event was so successful that it has been planned to be conducted every year.
