Glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] is an herbicide used to control weeds in agricultural and urban areas. Glyphosate’s long-term effects on the environment are not fully understood because cost-effective methods of monitoring glyphosate and its degradation product [aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA)] have not been widely explored. Acidic (5N nitric acid) and oxidizing conditions (persulfate and UV light) allow for the production of orthophosphate from glyphosate and AMPA. Orthophosphate concentrations are determined via the formation of the antimony-phosphomolybdate complex with flow injection analysis (FIA). The absorbance of the complex is measured using spectrophotometry. Adjustments of nitric acid and persulfate concentrations allow for optimal glyphosate and AMPA digestion conditions to be attained.
