Determination of trace elements in clinical samples by ICP-MS has become increasingly important in recent years, prompting developments which address the challenges of overcoming matrix effects associated with complex, human matrices such as urine or blood. The principle aim of this study was to develop a method to quantify Na, Mg, Ca, and K by ICP-MS, focusing on the attenuation of polyatomic argide and matrix interferences (i.e.38ArH+ on 39K+, and 40Ar+ on 40Ca+) generated in the plasma interface region. Method validation was carried out by assessing the limit of detection (LOD), linearity over a 1-3500 μg mL-1 range, and lower limit of quantitation. Using PerkinElmer NexIon 350D with kinetic energy discrimination (KED), the method was then applied to trace element standards in analog human matrices (2950 mg L-1 Na, 136 mg L-1 Ca) to determine the degree of matrix variability, which demonstrated the versatility of KED to overcome interferences under complex matrix conditions.
