The anaerobic synthesis of a biomimetic model copper(II) Schiff-base complex, [Cu(1,3dap)2](ClO4)2 (1,3dap = 1,3-diaminopropane) is reported. The complex is souble in water and acetonitrile. Recrystallization of the product from acetonitrile and ether yields analytically pure [Cu(1,3dap)2](ClO4)2. The identity of the compound is verified via FTIR and Elemental Analysis. The complex exhibits a weak (ε ≈ 70 M-1cm-1), broad visible absorbance band centered around 576 nm, consistent with a metal-centered d-d electronic transition. The complex undergoes a rapid ligand exchange in the presence of oxalic acid, ascorbic acid and EDTA. The rates of reaction and potential mechanism and products will be discussed, and compared to other biomimetic model complexes.
