Math readiness is essential for success in chemistry. However, many students come to General Chemistry with the inability to do the math required for standard introductory chemistry calculations. The use of a math assessment tool on the first day can serve to allay fears about math or allow certain students to identify math as being problematic, therefore increasing their chances of obtaining necessary, timely assistance. This poster presents the results of a short (10-minute) math assessment that is given in class on the first day of General Chemistry I. The assessment contains both arithmetic and algebra diagnostics. The assessment results are compared to overall success in the course at the end of the semester. Possible explanations for the discrepancy are presented. The goal of the assessment is to provide awareness of mathematical deficiencies to students and to increase the number of students who seek the extra help that they need for success in chemistry.
