Knowledge of molecular structure and chemical bonding is essential for any systematic study of chemistry. Valence is an iOS app that we designed to help students learn the theory of Lewis structures and to support their understanding of how these 2D representations translate into 3D molecular structure. The mobile app provides an intuitive way for students to experiment and play with Lewis structures, to gain a practical understanding of the way electrons organize into single, double and triple bonds, and lone pairs through visualization and interactivity, and to reflect on and apply learning. In a series of face-to-face lessons and homework activities, Valence was used to teach the fundamental of Lewis structure and student learning was assessed using pre/post-tests, recorded group conversations, exams, and individual interviews. We will share how we used the app in the general chemistry classroom and report the results of how its use prompted students to actively construct understanding of foundational concepts in molecular structure.
