Thiosemicarbazone compounds are a class of chemicals that have been reported to have many biologically active properties, including those of antimicrobial and antitumor properties. We have synthesized a series of 2-acetyl-6-methyoxy-pyridine thiosemicarbazone compounds that act as ligands toward transition metals such as palladium. These compounds act as tridentate monoanionic ligands. We utilize 1H NMR spectroscopy to characterize the ligands and metal complexes. We have discovered that loss of the hydrazinic proton is necessary for coordination of the ligand to the metal. These new palladium complexes have also shown to have high levels of activity against the growth and reproduction of microbes. The antimicrobial activity of these compounds have been tested by determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC studies) against four bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), two yeast (Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cervisiae), and a mold (Aspergillus niger).
