Functionalized polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers are being studied as a way of making recoverable reagents.  This research focuses on high-resolution imaging of MacMillan-type functionalized PAMAM dendrimers immobilized on a gold surface.  Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) imaging is capable of imaging functionalized surfaces with molecular-scale resolution and is able to provide the lateral and spatial dimensions of functionalized dendrimers on the gold surface.  STM imaging of these dendrimers also provides insight on interactions between functionalized dendrimers.  Furthermore, STM imaging can show how functionalized dendrimers may arrange differently than non-functionalized PAMAM dendrimers, in addition to potential intermolecular interactions. Together with the lateral dimensions calculated of un-functionalized PAMAM dendrimers it is possible to see the growth of the functionalized dendrimers at their various steps of functionalization. This research provides the first look at MacMillan type functionalized PAMAM dendrimers on a gold surface to further our understanding of how these functionalized dendrimers interact with each other, especially when compared to their non-functionalized counterparts.<br/>
