Hydrogels are a current hot topic in controlled drug delivery applications, especially if they are pH-sensitive. pH-sensitivtive hydrogels can be used to target different parts of the body which is useful in the distribution of medicine. The hydrogel was synthesized from hydroxypropyl methacrylamide (HPMA) and vinyl-pyridine (PV). A 1:1 complex of naproxen (NX) with β-cyclodextrin (CD) was incorporated directly into the hydrogel. Cyclodextrin has been shown to slow the relaxation rate of polymers in aqueous solutions which would lead to a slower release of the internal drugs. Cyclodextrin has a hydrophobic inside and hydrophilic outside which can form complexes with hydrophobic compounds, enhancing the solubility and bioavailability of compounds. It is proposed that side effects of naproxen can be controlled by using the cyclodextrin-containing hydrogels as drug delivery systems because they provide a controlled release resulting in a reduced concentration of free naproxen.
