Transitioning to a college setting for students intending on studying the sciences has proved difficult for unacceptably large numbers.  We in the university setting tend to regard high schools as roadblocks in the academic preparation of our students.  On the other hand, we do little to prepare teachers to address our expectations in their classrooms.  This session will describe efforts to bridge this gap, using the framework of the Next Generation Science Standards as a talking point for the kinds of learning we feel are needed.  I will provide examples we developed as a team with high school teachers that address some of the major stumbling blocks in the conceptualization of key chemical ideas.<br/>
