The Priory of Biology and Chemistry at East Los Angeles College is an ACS student chapter comprised of undergraduate students and faculty advisors focused on educating the community around the east Los Angeles area, and in providing guidance to STEM related careers. To accomplish this goal, we have a vast variety of activities and events that we use to reach out to our community and students. An activity that we heavily focus on is called Community Outreach. Here we focus on teaching and demonstrating interesting chemistry experiments to K-12 schools by allowing the students to interact with the experiment; therefore, developing their interest and gaining experience on how experiments are conducted. This activity has proven to inspire the young students to pursue STEM related careers. A monthly event we hold at East Los Angeles College to guide our students to explore different STEM careers is called Chemistry Guest Speaker Series. At this event, professionals from different STEM careers come and present either their research or pathways into their specific careers. This is an opportunity for our students to network with these professionals and be inspired to explore different career paths in STEM.
