This summer at the NW regional POGIL meeting, I had the opportunity to co-present a session on SWH, together with a community college professor to both college teachers and high school teachers. This helped clarify how I have adapted the SWH to meet the needs of high school students. <br/> <br/>Labs themselves are the original guided discovery experience! Writing lab reports is a vital part of any high school science class. Using a SWH approach allows, most importantly, for better pre-lab preparation which in turn creates a more thoughtful experience for the students in the lab and students are more confident in producing a lab report which better reflects their learning and understanding.<br/> <br/>A pre-lab process which I have developed, based on papers and presentations of the SWH, encourages students to read the lab instructions more carefully, and has them also focus on vocabulary, definitions and examples. This format helps students to be more conscious of the data they will need to collect and how they will then analyse the data.  Ultimately, students can then write their own beginning questions which must be answered by doing the lab.  Students have a better awareness of the entire lab.  The pre-lab preparation allows for an improved understanding of the concepts.  Students use their data and analysis more critically and write conclusions of a higher quality using a claims and evidence approach.
