Teaching a large enrollment general chemistry course is a challenge. We will describe our efforts to develop and implement short active learning POGIL-like activities in a 500-seat lecture hall and our efforts to develop and implement guided-inquiry green chemistry laboratory experiments using a modified combined Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) and POGIL approach. Graduate students and undergraduate chemistry majors who received training on teaching using the SWH and POGIL approaches taught the laboratory sections. Samples of the in-class lecture activities and samples of the laboratory experiments will be discussed. These activities include computer simulations and animations developed by Gelder, Abraham, and Greenbowe as part of the Next Generation Computer Simulation Project. The green chemistry activities in the laboratory and lecture were developed and implemented by Exton. Preliminary results comparing assessments of student content knowledge of chemistry taught using a traditional approach to lecture and laboratory will be compared to the active learning SWH/POGIL approach to teaching chemistry.
