In chemistry, 1,2-diols are commonly encountered in natural products, as synthetic intermediates, and as subunits in biomass material such as carbohydrates and their derivatives. As such, it is important to understand how diol structure and arrangement influence stability. The initial goal of this study is to determine reaction conditions for a thermochemical study of diols via reaction calorimetry. To do this, a variety of reactions that involved the oxidation of alkenes to 1,2-diols were conducted followed by GC analysis. In addition, calculations on the energies and structures of the expected product diol and its conformers have been carried out. The most promising reaction so far has been the synthesis of <i>trans</i>-1,2-cyclohexanediol from cyclohexene oxide. Future studies will lead to using the optimized reaction in further thermochemical studies such as calorimetry.
