Platinum based chemotherapy drugs are the standard in chemotherapy drugs today. However, in recent years ruthenium based drugs have been shown to be just as effective with less harmful side effects. A diruthenium complex, where the two metal centers are next to each other, was synthesized and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The diruthenium complex is very toxic to Hep G2 cells as determined by the MTT assay. The mode of Hep G2 cell death was determined via flow cytometry.
