Cibacron blue is a supported dye utilized in classic biochemistry laboratory experiments that involve the purification of lactate dehydrogenase; however, due to rising costs, an alternative is sought after. A small library of potential candidate molecules was synthesized by modifying the bioactive core of cibacron blue, anthraquinone. For example, one method involved converting 2-aminoanthraquinone and 1-aminoanthraquinone into diazonium salts. These diazonium salts were then coupled to corresponding nucleophiles such as substituted anilines or phenols. The binding affinities of the synthesized anthraquinone derivatives were determined via spectrometric assay. Further, electrophoresis was employed to evaluate the homogeneity of the anthraquinone derivatives.
