The Connected Chemistry Curriculum can be used in conjunction with existing curricular materials to highlight skills and ideas found in many of The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The entire curriculum is built so that students conduct investigations to learn chemical concepts. Students analyze and interpret data to infer relationships between variables. There are many instances in which students re-represent the data they’ve collected into molecular model drawings to communicate their findings to others. Many Disciplinary Core Ideas can be found throughout the nine units of The Connected Chemistry Curriculum. Several abstracts are shown in this abstract and more will be highlighted and demonstrated in the talk. The Modeling Matter Unit contains activities involving simulations and physical models that allows students to develop molecular models of simple molecules (MS-PS1-1). The Reactions Unit gives students the opportunity to determine whether or not new substances were formed or not at the molecular level (MS-PS1-2). Several units in the curriculum (e.g. Solutions, Kinetics, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium) explore the effects of factors on the movement of particles and interactions between molecules (Disciplinary Core Ideas: Chemical Reactions, Types of Interactions). Students also use Crosscutting Concepts to find patterns and determine the cause and effect of different variables on the behavior of molecules.
