In this presentation we present the ongoing work that has been carried out at Northern Arizona University (NAU) where the presenter is the sole inorganic chemist. Working primarily with undergraduates is a different experience than one that many new chemistry professors are used to. Over the past several years our research group has primarily been driven by undergraduate researchers and has remained productive.<br/> <br/>Our work has primarily focussed on the synthesis of palladium-tropylium sandwich complexes [Pd3Tr2]2+ and has more recently branched out into areas of ligand synthesis and design. This talk will examine the synthesis of a series of nitrile and pyridine substituted complexes and how this has been integrated in an undergraduate-centered curriculum.<br/> <br/>The discussion will also touch on some of the critical details that must be considered when transitioning to working primarily with undergraduate researchers. We’ll cover the chemistry as well as times when the undergraduates make you laugh, make you proud, or make you cry.
