Recently there has been a move towards less invasive forms of treatment for cancer. One such treatment is the use of gold nanoparticles to enhance near-infrared light and photoablate tumor cells. Over the course of ten weeks, gold core-shell nanoparticles of spherical and ellipsoidal shape were optimized to focus light at an 808 nanometer wavelength computationally. Both Mie theory and Finite Difference Time Domain methods were utilized. An ellipsoidal particle with a silica core and 10 nanometer gold shell having a long axis with radius 58 nanometers gave the best enhancement of the electromagnetic field around the particle, 5.4 times that of the control particle. The control particle was a sphere with a radius of 60 nanometers and a 10 nanometer shell.
