Work with the Professional Development Program (PDP) at the University of California, Berkeley, was a significant activity for me. The PDP was created by UCB faculty in the sixties in response to the urban unrest of the time. It provided intense additional preparation for entry-level math courses for first-year students from underrepresented groups. With experience gained as a member of the policy arm of PDP, when I became Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs for the College of Chemistry, I created a comparable program in the College of Chemistry - College of Chemistry Scholars Program (COCSP) for our entry-level chemistry course. The COCSP similarly provided an intense supplementary educational experience and a reserved study area for members of the program. Aspects of the program will be described as well as other efforts that were pursued.
