The current role of hydrogen (H2) in our society is clear: H2 is one of the world’s most important industrial chemicals, currently produced at a rate &gt; 50 MT/yr. Most of this H2 is derived from fossil fuels, notably from steam methane reformation (SMR), and goes to two key sectors: petroleum refining and to ammonia synthesis for fertilizer production. While it is clear that H2 will continue to be needed now and in the future, there is potential for additional roles for H2 in our society that could expand its market significantly. This paper will address major questions that abound regarding the future of H2, in particular: Can new, sustainable pathways be developed for H2 generation that can compete with conventional processes in a cost-effective manner? What is the current status and the future prospect of fuel cells, particularly in regards to the transportation sector? Can H2 serve as an energy carrier operating at a large enough scale to help decarbonize energy in a substantial manner? In discussing these and related topics, there will be a major focus on the key research challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed to advance these technologies forward.
