Ex-core radiation fields are the final expression of numerous processes associated with operating a nuclear power plant. Maintaining radiation fields as low as reasonably achievable is a high priority goal. Typically, radiation field generation processes are studied through exploring individual processes; an approach limited to only one change. Realistically, multiple changes are implemented at any given time. <br/><br/>Focus of EPRI’s current studies is to explore plant operating and radiation field data employing multivariate statistics to uncover hidden processes. Despite the perception that corrosion, activation, transport, and deposition processes are understood, modeling approaches often fail to reproduce, even retroactively, plant experiences. Furthermore, implementation of seemingly well-understood measures still causes unexpected system responses. For instance, radiation fields on main circuit components are reduced under zinc chemistry, while auxiliary system in several plants experience higher dose rates.
