Calix[4]pyrroles were first reported by Baeyer in the 19<sup>th</sup> century. They are synthetic compounds containing four or more pyrrole or pyrrole-like heterocyclic subunits within a non-conjugated framework. In this lecture, calix[n]pyrroles will be discussed in the context of recent efforts to develop them as ion pair receptors, drug leads, and components in electron transfer reactions. Efforts to create “tunable” systems that are capable of acting as anion-triggered “molecular switches”, logic gates, and environmentally responsive, self-assembled materials will also be presented.<br/>This project has benefited from a number of collaborations, including with the groups of Philip A.
