The textile finishing industry is the greatest consumer of high quality fresh water per kg of treated material and with the natures of their production processes contributing to pollution. Not only textile wastewater but also textile products often contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, azo-dyes, dioxins and heavy metals, that might pose a risk to humans and the environment. Textile dyes are designed to be resistant to microbial, chemical, thermal and photolytic degradation, the release of such toxic, recalcitrant and colored industrial effluents in the environment is a dramatic source of esthetic pollution and perturbation of the aquatic life. The advanced oxidation technologies (AOPs) have high capacity for destruction of contaminants refractory and are common for the removal of dyes. It is well-known that AOPs can be very useful because of the short-time of treatment by powerful oxidizing agents such as hydroxyl radicals. Ozonation stands out for its efficiency in AOPs, it has been reported that the addition of metallic elements and H2O2 to this process not only improve the degradation rate of the organic compound but also its degree of mineralization. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of the metallic systems Fe and Cu on the ozonation efficiency of indigo carmine and its main degradation product, isatin-5-sulfonic acid (without H2O2). By a chemical reduction method the synthesis of Fe2+, Cu2+ and Fe/Cu particles was possible. The bimetallic system Fe/Cu was the most efficient in terms not only of IC removal but also regarding by-products oxidation (Fig 1). The effect of the addition of Fe particles was studied; Cu and Fe/Cu in the efficiency of oxidation of indigo carmine by ozonation through reactions involving highly oxidizing free radicals. At all cases, a catalytic effect cannot be neglected through fenton, ozonation and fenton-like reactions. The highest mineralization degree (94%) and COD reduction (95%) of the IC solution was achieved after 10 min of ozonation under pH 3, ozone dose of 0.005 gL-1, 1000 mgL-1 of Fe/Cu.
