The combination of water, a diboron reagent, and a palladium catalyst can be used to hydrogenate or deuterate a variety of alkenes and alkynes at ambient temperature and pressure. Deuterium labelling confirms that water is the source of hydrogen atoms, and evidence is presented that supports a homogeneous catalytic mechanism involving alkene insertion into a palladium–hydride intermediate.
