The intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of N-substituted oxazolones provides a variety of heterocyclic frameworks with obvious potential for alkaloid synthesis. Two main strategies are currently under investigation – either Direct Incorporation of the immediate cycloadduct scaffold itself, or Rearrangement to complementary patterns with further applications. Divergent synthesis of several distinct alkaloid classes from individual cycloadducts is currently underway.
